In Mrs Bennet, Jane Austen created one of the most embarrassing mothers in literature.
There she is loud, inappropriate and annoying; but like all embarrassing mothers, Mrs Bennet means well and deserves our understanding.
What is driving her nearly off her rocker is the responsibility of having five daughters who having to absolutely must get married or else.
A woman who didn’t marry could look forward to living with her relatives or face the option of being a governess, or a lady’s maid. If this didn’t work, she was in danger of slipping off this scale of gentility altogether. And then her life could become very dark and dangerous indeed.
Mrs Bennet doesn’t need to be told the hard fact of this situation, she knows it in every adult fibre of her being, so when she takes her daughters out in society with the order “Smile Girl, Smile”, she means “smile” as if your whole life depends on it… because it does.

In Mrs Bennet, Jane Austen ha creato una delle più imbarazzanti madri nella storia della letteratura.
E' rumorosa, inappropriata e seccante, ma come tutte le madri imbarazzanti, le intenzioni di Mrs Bennet sono buone e merita la nostra comprensione.
Quello che l'ha quasi costretta ad essere così è la responsabilità di avere 5 figlie da far sposare o far fare loro qualche altra cosa.
Una donna che non si è sposata può andare avanti a vivere con i suoi genitori o scegliere di diventare governante o dama di compagnia.
Se tutto questo non funziona c'è il rischio che ella perda tutta la sua grazia e la sua vita può diventare molto scura e pericolosa.
Mrs Bennet non ha bisogno che le si dica qual è la parte più difficile della situazione. Lo sa in ogni adulta fibra del suo essere, così quando ha portato la figlia nella società ordinandole "Sorridi, ragazza, sorridi!", lei intendeva "sorridi come se tutta la tua vita dipendesse da questo." perchè era così.

First Impressions.

21 year old Jane Austen was a keen observer of how quick we are to judge other people and how often we get it wrong.
Jane didn't talk much about her work but she liked to read drafts of her work outloud to her family. When she read the book she called "First impressions", her father thought it was so good he sent it to a publisher, offering to pay the cost of printing himself. But the manuscript made no impression whatsoever. The package came back with "declined by return post" written across the top.

Jane continued to work on her book and she gave it a new title. Her novel was finally published 17 years after it had been rejected.
Her brother Henry had a literary friend who was so taken with the book that he said it was much too clever to have been the work of a woman.


It became the most popular book Jane Austen ever wrote. How wrong can first impressions be?

La ventunenne Jane Austen era un'osservatrice perspicace di quanto velocemente giudichiamo le altre persone e del quanto spesso ci sbagliamo.Jane non parlava molto del suo lavoro ma le piaceva leggerne brani ad alta voce alla sua famiglia. Quando lesse il libro ''Orgoglio e Pregiudizio'', suo padre pensò fosse così buono da mandarlo ad un editore, offrendosi di pagare il costo della stampa.
Ma il manoscritto non fece la stessa impressione. Il pacco ritorno con la scritto ''rispedito al mittente'' scritto sopra.

Jane continuò a lavorare al suo libro e gli diede un nuovo titolo. Il suo romanzo fu così pubblicato 17 anni dopo essere stato rifiutato. Suo fratello Henry aveva un amico letterario che fu talmente preso dal libro che disse che era troppo intelligente per essere il lavoro di una donna.

Divenne così il libro più famoso che Jane Austen abbia mai scritto.
Quanto possono essere errate le prime impressioni?

Decisions and regrets.
Tonight, Miss Jane Austen the writer meets Jane Austen the woman, a woman of forty who's making quite a name for herself writing novels about courtship, love and marriage, while she herself remains uncourted and unmarried, living with her mother and older sister Cassandra, also a spinster. Cass, the beauty of the family, was set to marry an ambitious young minister but he died of a fever and they say the news of his death aged her overnight. But what about the lively, attractive, flirtatious Jane. Was there no one charming enough, handsome enough or rich enough for the clever miss Austen?
The answer may have been in her letters and diaries, but they where nearly all burned when she died.
We can only imagine.

Questa sera Miss Jane Austen scrittrice incontra Miss Jane Austin la donna. Una donna di 40 anni che sta diventando famosa scrivendo romanzi sul corteggiamento, l'amore e il matrimonio, rimanendo lei mai corteggiata e mai sposata, vivendo con sua madre e sua sorella, Cassandra, anche lei zitella. Cass, la bella della famiglia, avrebbe dovuto sposare un ambizioso giovane ministro che però morì.
Dicono che la notizia della sua morte ha invecchiò.
Ma che dire della briosa, attraente Jane?
Non c'era nessun uomo affascinante, carino e ricco abbastanza per l'intelligente Miss Austen?
La risposta potrebbe essere nelle sue lettere e nei diari, ma furono quasi tutti bruciati dopo la sua morte.
Possiamo solo immaginare.

It must be wonderful to be a brilliant writer, to be imaginative, to say funny, clever things, to write your own good lines, like Janes Austen, who was funny in letters, funny on the page, ironic, witty, and, like her character Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park.

Mary is a woman almost as talented as Jane Austen herself, she gets all the best lines and she's a woman men notice and fall in love with, but for what we know, Jane Austen was herself a bit of a plain-Jane. So Jane Austen is obviously making up for what's missing in her own life and putting it in her fiction.

In Mary Crawford, she's creating a heroine based on herself, but a more attractive self. Except that Mary Crawford isn't the heroine of Mansfield Park. The story belongs to someone else. It's a character called Fanny Price, an outsider whose good qualities have nothing to do with being clever.

Dev'essere meraviglioso essere una scrittrice brillante, avere grande immaginazione, dire cose divertenti e intelligenti, scrivere delle buone battute come Jane Austen, divertente nelle sue parole e sulle pagine che scriveva, ironica, arguta così come il suo personaggio Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park.

Mary è una donna con un talento quasi pari a Jane Austen.
Ha sempre la battuta pronta ed è una donna che gli uomini notano e di cui si innamorano, ma per ciò che sappiamo, Jane Austen era una persona semplice, così inventava quello che mancava nella propria vita e la inseriva nelle sue opere.

In Mary Crawford ha creato un'eroina sulla base di se stessa, ma molto più attraente di lei.
Fatta eccezione per il fatto che Mary Crawford non era l'eroina di Mansfild Park.
La storia appartiene a qualcun altro, al personaggio chiamato Fanny Price, un forestiero, le cui buone qualità non hanno nulla a che fare con l'essere intelligente.
